Is It against the building code in IL to put a furnace in a crawlspace?
I am not familiar with building code, I am just viewed a home that had the furnace in the crawlspace.

- I don't know about in IL because I live in NYC but as a fireman's daughter I would not want my furnace in a crawl space because if it blew up by accident it would surely cause a fire. In NYC furnaces and boilers have to be in a fire proof room so that if something happens there is a chance for the fire to be contained. I would be very surprised to find out that others states don't have similar laws.
- It is not against the building codes as long as it is done properly.
- That is not against code. If it is installed correctly, it is very smart and efficient to put the furnace below the floor. It also saves space.
- As long as it is NOT a multliple dwelling (Some citys have fire codes for these type of blgs & would want it in a fire froof room plus have a smoke/ Fire detector. You should beable to put one in a private house. It also MUST have a Vent on the outside wall to let in fresh combustion air from the outside of the bldg.
